| Pet of the Month Dillon Brown Headed Parrot 10 Years Old Williston, VT |
| Pet Of The Month : Dillon This month I wanted to feature one of my pets! Dillon just turned 10 years old and has been a wonderful pet and companion. In the summer of 1998, I was working for a pet store and given the assignment to pick up a baby bird from a local breeder. I had experience with hand feeding baby birds in the past and was excited to be raising one again. I brought the baby bird back to the store and immediately fell in love. The little baby only had a few feathers and needed lots of care. I hand fed it every few hours until it was able to eat on its own. The store had a contest to name the baby. The winning name was Dillon. As Dillon grew old enough for sale, many customers showed interest. We did a very intensive screening process to make sure the birds would go into a proper home that would be able to care for them over their long lives. We found several homes that would have been great for Dillon, but there was one problem. Dillon thought I was the world and would not warm up to anyone else. To make a long story short... Dillon loved me and only me. He would not have been happy in any other home but mine. I decided to adopt him! Dillon has made an awesome pet. He has been happy and healthy though the years and brought lots of joy to my life. 2 years ago, I noticed Dillon acting funny and went to his cage to investigate. He was sitting in his food dish and gazing into my eyes strangely. I put my hand in the cage to take him out and he wouldn't budge. I though something was wrong and picked him up to investigate. To my amazement... I found 3 eggs in the food dish! Dillon is a girl! The eggs were not fertile as Dillon had not been around another parrot of her type, but this explained lots about her behavior. For 8 years I though Dillon was a boy! I decided to keep her name the same. Dillon has continued to be a great pet. She sits beside me as I write this. A parrot of this type can live 30 or more years. I feel blessed to have her as my companion and look forward to many happy years to come. |
